Started during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Elderly Embrace Care Network was a youth-led, senior-focused nonprofit media organization aimed at fostering intergenerational dialogue and channeling a culture of deep respect for our elderly. We created content for and about seniors, creating a celebratory cultural narrative.

OUR FOUNDATIONAL ELEMENTS

SERVICE

We created several senior resources, including a nostalgic playlist, emotional hygiene kit, and joke book; we also kickstarted a video series to help seniors understand Generation Z youth.

EDUCATION

We educated youth through our intergenerational curriculum on the barriers that seniors often face and launched the Senior Citizens Day celebratory challenge with participants across the US.

COMMUNITY

Our podcast shared seniors’ life stories and wisdom with the world. Also, our blog provided helpful content for our elderly in the Culture, Tech, Our Stories, News, Health, & Global categories.

It is with great respect and appreciation that we spotlight the incredible Harriette Thompson! Ms. Harriette Thompson became the oldest woman to ever compete in a marathon at the age of 92 and in a half-marathon at the age of 94 — she was truly a powerhouse who embodied resilience and strength with every ounce of her being. She was a cancer survivor (overcoming squamous cell carcinoma) who started running marathons in her mid-70s after an eventful career as a concert pianist, and her story and personality continue to inspire so many who have been blessed with the opportunity to meet her or have heard about her beautiful legacy. The heart of her youthfulness is revealed in this lovely quote: “At age 94, I feel like I did when I was 16”. Ms. Thompson’s impactful work has helped raise over $100,000 in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Grandma Moses, whose full name was Anna Mary Robertson Moses, was a precious American folk artist who lent her gifts to the world as she created over 1,500 pieces of artwork. A relatively less known fact about her is that she started pursuing art in her 70s! Truly, Grandma Moses is a testament to how it is never too late to follow your heart and see where it takes you. In particular, her paintings like Out for Christmas Trees and Grandma Moses Goes to the Big City are especially beloved, and her ability to evoke emotion and nostalgia through incredibly detailed rural scenery and agricultural practices makes her style truly timeless. Especially in honor of Native American Indian Heritage Month, we are BEYOND excited to dedicate this post to the one and only Larry Curley! Mr. Curley co-founded and serves as the Executive Director of the National Indian Council on Aging, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization “focused on the needs of aging American Indian and Alaska Native elders”. As an advocate and speaker, he was a part of the American Society on Aging’s “Legacy Interviews” webcast series, and as a member of the Navajo Nation himself, he has been instrumental in speaking up for American Indian seniors, as shown through his creation of the first Arizona Indian aging conference back in 1975. One of his quotes via an interview led by Next Avenue that we find particularly essential is: “The elderly Indian population are our last link to our language, to our traditions, to… spirituality”. It is vital to protect this population, and this necessity is a major part of what makes Mr. Curley such an influential figure.
